Air Purifier Filters

Understanding Air Purifier Filters

Before you start looking at air purifier filters you should understand that there are several different types of filters used in air purifiers. We find lots of differnet air purifiers and they will each have a filtration system designed to work specifically for that machine, though some manufacturers may make several models use a standard filter cartridge.Having said all that, there are some air purifiers which will require filters to be replaced on a regular basis while others don’t. Some air purifiers do not even use filters. To understand what you will need to do and if you need to change filters you first need to decide which type of air purifier you will purchase so here is a quick guide to air purifiers.

HEPA Air Purifiers

First off we look at HEPA air purifiers. HEPA is a standard and the initials stand for High Efficiency Particulate Air (sometimes Absorber or Arrestance is used instead of air.) For an air purifier to able to be classified as a HEPA system, it must be able to capture particulate matter that is 0.3 microns or larger in size. To give you an idea what this actually means, 0.3 microns is 25 to 50 times smaller than a typical person can see with the naked eye. You will find that many of the HEPA air purifiers available on the market today will use a replaceable or washable filter and a lot of these air purifiers will feature a filter replacement indicator that gives a sign or signal when the filter needs to be replaced. Some HEPA purifiers feature a pre-filter to help provide the quality of air purifying required and this may also require cleaning or replacementl.

Ionic Air Purifiers

Most ionic of the air purifiers available do not use filters or require filter changing. They work by sending out negative ionic streams which attaches itself to tiny particulate matter and gives the matter a negative ionic charge. The particles then become too heavy to float in the air and they fall to the ground. Most of the high quality ionic purifiers you see on sale today capture the particulate matter using stainless steel electromagnetically charged collector plates and though these plates may need occasional cleaning they do not need to be replaced. Fortunately this is a simple procedure to remove, clean, and replace them. You may find ionic air purifiers that feature filters for extra purification, or HEPA purifiers that have an ionic option.

UV Light Air Purifiers

The UV light air purifiers work by making use of ultraviolet light to break down and destroy particles and allergens. Choosing a straight UV purifier means you won’t need to worry about filters but there are also quite a few HEPA and ionic purifiers that come with UV purification features. So, depending on what kind of model you get, you may need to clean or replace filters.

Air purifier filters range in price by quite a lot, from cheap to expensive. They are readily available both online and in local stores. Most stores that sell air purifiers will stock a vast variety of filters for many different types and makes of machine. If you check out online stores you may be able to make some savings though you should check the delivery charge to compare prices fully.
